Essay Writing Contest

A friend emailed me earlier and shared to me a very exciting essay writing contest for students. Great prizes are at stake and if i would have qualified I would really be thrilled to take part in this great opportunity. Thus, I'm so excited to share this to all of you and hope you take time to share this with your dear relatives and friends.

"Local Views on Global Issues: The Role of Trade in the Global Economic Recovery"


Write a 1,500 word essay highlighting the importance of global trade in creating jobs and growth for the world economy.



BACKGROUND:


Given the ongoing global economic crisis, World Trade Week UK seeks to raise awareness on the benefits of keeping markets and trade borders open as a means for the further prosperity of the global economy. The weeklong celebration also aims to highlight the need to shun protectionism and demonstrate that trade is the most direct means to end global poverty.



The World Trade Week is a testament of the UK Government’s commitment in helping rebuild the global economy by championing global trade as the best means in ensuring growth and eradicating poverty.



As part of a wide range of activities of the 1st World Trade Week UK, the British Embassy Manila, together with the Universal Access to Competitiveness and Trade (U-ACT), a non-stock, non-profit, advocacy and research think-tank, primarily focused on issues relating to trade policy making, trade negotiations and agreements and the implementing partner of the UK Government on its trade-related project- the Institutionalization of Multistakeholder Consultation for Stakeholder Trade Negotiations (I-MUST) are inviting all College Students to take part in an essay writing contest with the theme “Local Views on Global Issues: The Role of Trade in the Global Economic Recovery”.



ESSAY WRITING CONTEST


The contest is open to all college students of any course who can discuss in one thousand five hundred words or less the theme "Local Views on Global Issues: The Role of Trade in the Global Economic Recovery". The entries must be able to demonstrate the importance and advantage of maintaining open markets and trade borders for the benefit of the global economy.

All entries must be original in form and should be type-written in essay format in English, complete with bibliographic notes. Entries must use a font style of times new roman, a font size of 12, and have a double-spaced line format.

The essays will be judged by the World Trade Week UK Essay Writing Contest Panel of Judges based on the following criteria:

a. Substance, Content, Originality, Analysis, and Adherence to the Essay Theme – 65%



b. Logic, Organization, and Coherence- 15%



c. Style and Presentation- 20%

SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES

Entries, together with valid proof of current enrollment at a University (ID or certificate of enrollment) and contact details (email address and mobile number) must be submitted on or before 1 June 2009 and may be sent through email at info@uactphilippines.org with the subject “WTW Essay Entry”.

PRIZES

The Grand Winner of the Essay Writing Contest will receive the Following:

1. PHP 25,000

2. Publication of the winning essay in a National Broadsheet and in the U-ACT’s website

3. Meet His Excellency Peter Beckingham, UK Ambassador to the Philippines

4. Receive a scholarship grant from the U-ACT to the modules being run under the I-MUST Learning Institute

Three (3) other Consolation Winners will be chosen and will receive PHP 5,000 each.

NOTIFICATION OF WINNERS

All winners will be notified through SMS or email by 4 June 2009. The awarding ceremony will be held on 8 June 2009. Details for the venue will follow.
